CDU to make pediatric U-examinations mandatory - Hamburg's CDU Demands Mandatory Health Checks for All Children Under Six

Hamburg's opposition CDU party is calling for stricter rules on children's health check-ups. Currently, only two of the nine routine screenings—known as U-examinations—are mandatory in the city. The party argues that all nine should be compulsory to better protect young children's health and welfare.

Germany's U-examinations are a key part of early healthcare, designed to spot health risks and developmental issues in children up to age six. In Hamburg, however, only the U6 and U7 check-ups are legally required, leaving gaps in coverage. The CDU now wants the city's Senate to pass legislation making all U1 to U9 screenings obligatory.

Christin Christ, the CDU's health policy spokesperson, criticized the governing SPD and Green coalition for delaying action. She argued that 'children can't wait' and that Hamburg must introduce binding rules immediately. The coalition had previously promised to explore expanding mandatory screenings but put plans on hold, citing the need for further digitalization.

The CDU's proposal includes a legal duty for parents to attend, a reliable invitation and reminder system, and greater involvement from public health offices. According to Christ, child protection cannot be left to chance—it requires clear rules and consistent enforcement. She stressed that these measures would ensure every child, regardless of background, receives essential early health checks.

The push for mandatory screenings comes amid concerns that Hamburg's current system leaves too many children unchecked. If passed, the new rules would bring the city in line with broader efforts to strengthen preventive healthcare. The Senate has yet to respond to the CDU's demands.
