A Decade Inside Broadmoor: Life After the UK's Toughest Psychiatric Hospital
Paul Knight spent a decade inside Broadmoor, one of the UK's most secure psychiatric hospitals. Life there was strict, repetitive and often uncomfortable. After his release in 2012, he faced unexpected challenges adjusting to the outside world again. Knight's daily routine at Broadmoor began at 8 am. Mornings were followed by time in the day room with other patients. Small comforts, like fish and chips on Fridays or a birthday cake, broke the monotony.
During his ten years inside, he encountered some of Britain's most notorious criminals. These included serial killer Peter Sutcliffe, cannibal Peter Bryan, and murderer Danny Gonzalez. Islamist terrorist Haroon Rashid Aswat was also among the inmates he met. Physical pain and boredom defined much of Knight's time there. Even after his release, simple tasks proved difficult. Crossing a road or handling everyday situations became overwhelming. By 2015, Knight had rebuilt part of his life. He married and became a stepfather to his wife's two children.
Knight left Broadmoor in 2012 after a decade of strict routines and confinement. Adjusting to freedom took time, with even basic activities causing struggle. His later years saw him form a new family, marking a shift from his past in the hospital.
