A trans man's decade-long journey to self-acceptance and legal recognition
Jesús Misael has shared his journey as a trans man, describing the long and often difficult path to self-acceptance. From a young age, he felt a disconnect between his identity and his body, a struggle that shaped his early years. As a child, he often prayed to wake up as the person he knew himself to be. He saw himself more as a boy but felt his body did not reflect who he truly was. His confusion persisted for years, with little information about trans men available online, leaving him to navigate his identity alone.
He began to address his feelings more openly after his mother was diagnosed with cancer. Seeking psychological support helped him name what he felt and understand his identity better. A month before her passing, he came out to her, and she encouraged him to seek happiness.
On 8 October 2012, he started hormone therapy, which brought physical changes like a deeper voice and facial hair. In 2018, he legally changed his name. Despite these steps forward, he faced challenges, including family members who distanced themselves and workplace obstacles due to outdated documents.
Today, he advocates for allowing children to explore their interests freely without immediate gender labelling. He maintains a stable relationship with his family, including his wife and daughter. His journey involved both personal and external hurdles, from self-doubt to societal barriers. Through persistence and support, he achieved legal recognition and a clearer sense of self. His story highlights the importance of understanding and acceptance in the process of self-discovery.
