King County faces deadly surge in drug-related overdoses since May

A surge in drug-related deaths has struck King County in recent weeks. Since late May, the Medical Examiner’s Office has recorded 37 such fatalities, with multiple cases tied to potent substance combinations. The string of deaths began in April. Wanda Elaine Hembd, 61, died in Kent on April 10 from a mix of morphine, mitragynine, cyclobenzaprine, and bupropion. Later that month, Emmanuel Ramirez, 42, was found dead in Seatac after ingesting a combination of mitragynine compounds, butalbital, oxycodone, fluoxetine, and lorazepam.

On April 28, Nicholas Yorde, 29, succumbed to acute alcohol and drug intoxication involving meprobamate and carisoprodol in Seattle. The trend continued into June, with David Lynn Winter, 62, dying in Seattle on June 4 from fentanyl and methamphetamine. The next day, Michael Duane Stegemann, 53, passed away in Kent from the same combination.

Robert Joseph Lumpkin, 47, died in Auburn on June 6 after consuming fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine. The following day, Daniel Vincent Smith, 37, and Ralph Alexander Young, 64, both died in Seattle from acute fentanyl and methamphetamine intoxication. On June 8, Kneejamaya Lovie-Lajoy Goldsmith, 22, became the latest victim, losing her life to fentanyl in Seattle. The deaths highlight the growing dangers of polydrug use in the region. Authorities have recorded 37 drug-related fatalities since May 26, with fentanyl and methamphetamine appearing repeatedly in toxicology reports.
