Austria Battles Record Heatwave as Health Risks Surge for Vulnerable Groups

Austria is currently facing a persistent heatwave, with parts of Burgenland under the highest heat alert level. Health experts have raised concerns about the growing risks, particularly for vulnerable groups. Katharina Reich, Director-General for Public Health, has highlighted the urgency of addressing these challenges. Reich recently discussed the National Heat Protection Plan in response to the ongoing heatwave. She pointed to meteorological data showing that heatwaves are becoming more frequent and intense. A Heat Protection Ordinance was introduced on 1 January to improve the country’s ability to manage such events.

During the discussion, Reich noted a sharp increase in circulatory problems and hospital admissions during extreme heat. She emphasised that Austria, traditionally cooler than southern Europe, must now adapt to these changing conditions. Despite the risks, crisis and disaster management officials confirmed they are prepared to handle major events safely, even under the highest heat alerts.

Reich also defended the decision to allow large-scale events to proceed, provided proper precautions are taken. She dismissed arguments from climate sceptics, stating that the current trends cannot be compared to isolated hot summers from past decades. The heatwave has already impacted public health, with vulnerable groups facing higher risks. The new Heat Protection Ordinance aims to mitigate these effects, while officials remain ready to manage large events safely. Austria is taking steps to adapt to a warmer climate and its associated challenges.
