Can Cheese Really Protect You from Alcohol's Harmful Effects?
Scientists have suggested that eating cheese before drinking alcohol could help reduce its harmful effects. The recommendation comes as new research highlights how certain properties of cheese may interact with alcohol in the body. Cheese contains calcium and B vitamins, which support the nervous system, brain, and muscles. Studies indicate it may also act as a protective barrier in the digestive system, slowing the absorption of alcohol. This effect was observed in animal tests, where rats given cheese before alcohol showed lower blood levels of ethanol and acetaldehyde, a toxic byproduct of alcohol metabolism.
Some research further suggests that cheese could reduce inflammation and lower the risk of liver damage. It may also lessen the toxicity of ethanol breakdown products on the liver. However, experts emphasise that no food can fully prevent the consequences of excessive drinking. While cheese may offer some protection, the most reliable ways to avoid a hangover remain moderate drinking and staying hydrated. The findings do not replace the need for responsible alcohol consumption. Still, the potential benefits of cheese in this context provide a new angle for further study.
