Maharashtra's first cancer care navigators complete groundbreaking training program

The first batch of the Patient Navigation in Oncology Care Programme has successfully concluded. It was a joint effort by Tata Memorial Centre and ECHO India under the Cancer Care Bharat initiative. The programme trained 73 healthcare professionals from Maharashtra to assist cancer patients through their treatment journey. The inaugural batch included 49 Medical Officers from NHM Maharashtra and 24 representatives from BMC. Support came from the National Health Mission Maharashtra, the State Institute of Health and Family Welfare in Nagpur, and BMC. Tata Memorial Centre served as the Academic Hub for Treatment & Care and Patient Navigation within the programme.

The trained professionals will now help cancer patients by ensuring timely diagnosis, referrals, treatment, follow-up care, and access to support services. A certificate distribution ceremony will take place at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai on June 27 to celebrate the completion of this first group.

Future batches of the Patient Navigation ECHO Programme are planned for West Bengal and Gujarat. The broader Cancer Care Bharat Programme aims to train nearly 17,500 healthcare professionals across India. The completion of this batch marks a step forward in improving cancer care support. The newly trained professionals will begin assisting patients with navigation through complex treatment processes. More regions will soon join the initiative as the programme expands.
