Iloilo City battles measles surge as vaccination rates decline in 2026

Iloilo City has recorded 11 measles cases by Morbidity Week No. 24 in 2026. Health officials report a drop in childhood immunisation rates due to hesitancy and lack of awareness. Authorities are now stepping up efforts to tackle the issue. In 2025, the city saw 72 suspected measles-rubella cases, up from 68 in 2024. This year’s cases include six suspected and five confirmed. The trend has prompted action from local health teams.

The City Health Office (CHO) is preparing a Measles-Rubella Supplementary Immunization Activity for August. It will target children aged six to 59 months. The CHO is also updating its list of eligible children and visiting homes to encourage participation.

The Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH-WV CHD) and CHO stress that vaccines are safe, effective, and free. They urge parents to vaccinate their children to prevent outbreaks and protect community health. The campaign aims to boost immunisation coverage and stop the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases. Parents and guardians are asked to cooperate and bring their children for vaccination. Health officials continue to monitor cases and promote awareness.
