Pittsburgh declares code red heat advisory through July 1

Allegheny County officials have issued a code red heat advisory from June 29 to July 1. Temperatures are expected to exceed 90 degrees during this period. Residents are being urged to take precautions to stay safe. To help people cope with the extreme heat, five cooling centers in Pittsburgh will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. between June 29 and July 2. A full list of locations is available online, and communities can suggest additional sites if needed.

County pools and spray parks are also open every day from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., as long as the weather allows. For those without shelter, Second Avenue Commons will provide water and cooling supplies daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Allegheny County Department of Human Services will actively check on older adults and unhoused individuals during the advisory. Older residents can call for support or visit senior centres for assistance. Officials have also reminded everyone to drink plenty of water, avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, and never leave children or pets in parked vehicles. Residents are encouraged to look out for vulnerable neighbours, friends, and family members. Cooling centres, pools, and support services are in place to help people stay safe during the heatwave. The advisory remains in effect until July 1.
