May's Solar Storm Surge Puts Earth on High Alert This Week

Scientists have warned of increased solar activity as May brings a surge in geomagnetic disturbances. The Sun’s active phase, which began in 2022, has led to abrupt changes in forecasts. More sunspot clusters have now appeared on its surface, rising from two to seven in recent days. Over the past week, two powerful X-class solar flares erupted, each capable of triggering intense geomagnetic storms. Earth avoided the worst effects as the bursts occurred on the side of the Sun facing away from our planet.

The coming weeks will see these active sunspot clusters turn toward Earth. This shift could bring stronger storms, with disturbances already forecast for much of May. Moderate fluctuations are expected on 13 days, ranging from level 3 to 4 on the geomagnetic storm scale.

The most severe activity is anticipated on May 7 and 8, with level-4 storms predicted. Level-3 disturbances are also expected on May 6, May 9, May 13-16, May 20-21, and May 26-27. The increased solar activity may affect those most sensitive to weather changes. People with chronic illnesses, cardiovascular diseases, and neurological disorders are considered the most vulnerable. Forecasters continue to monitor the situation as the Sun’s behaviour remains unpredictable.
