AREDS2 Supplements Now Available to Slow Macular Degeneration Progression
AREDS2 supplements are now available for those with intermediate or advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD). These supplements aim to slow the disease’s progression and reduce the risk of severe vision loss. They build on earlier research proving the benefits of certain vitamins and minerals for eye health. The original Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) first showed that high doses of antioxidants and zinc could lower the risk of advanced AMD. AREDS2 later refined this formula, adding lutein and zeaxanthin while removing beta-carotene to improve safety for smokers. The updated version includes vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, copper, lutein, and zeaxanthin.
Studies found that AREDS2 reduces the risk of intermediate AMD progressing to advanced stages by about 25%. It may also delay geographic atrophy or wet AMD, the two most severe forms of the condition. However, the supplements can cause mild side effects like stomach cramps, nausea, or changes in bowel movements.
High zinc levels in AREDS2 may lead to copper deficiency, while excessive vitamin E can increase bleeding risks. For this reason, the formula is carefully balanced. It is particularly recommended for current or former smokers, as the original AREDS formula carried a higher risk of lung cancer for this group. AREDS2 offers a science-backed way to slow AMD progression and protect vision. The formula is designed to maximise benefits while minimising risks. Doctors often advise it for those at higher risk of advanced AMD, especially smokers or ex-smokers.
