A 62-year-old Scottish tourist named Aileen fell seriously ill on Benalmadena beach on 29 May 2023. She lost consciousness and was quickly attended to by lifeguards after a hammock attendant raised the alarm. Aileen was found sitting on the ground, feeling dizzy and pale, with bluish lips. Lifeguards Melanie Waller and Rodrigo Escobar responded immediately. They initially assessed her as a Priority 1 emergency due to the severity of her symptoms.
After Aileen complained of thirst, the team gave her sugar water. She soon regained consciousness, and her condition improved. Her case was then reclassified as Priority 2.
Benalmadena had recently launched its summer vigilance and rescue operation, running from 15 May to 15 October. The scheme includes 45 lifeguards, rescue watercraft, and a staffed ambulance across nine coastal points to handle emergencies during peak season. Aileen later wrote an emotional letter thanking the lifeguards for their rapid response. The hammock attendant and lifeguard team were commended for their quick and effective actions. The incident highlights the importance of the enhanced summer safety measures in place.
