Kauvery Hospital Uses Robotics to Tackle High-Risk Colorectal Cancer Surgeries
Kauvery Hospital in Vadapalani has successfully performed complex robotic colorectal cancer surgeries on three high-risk patients. The individuals, aged between 45 and 60, were severely overweight and had multiple underlying health conditions. The procedures were carried out using advanced robotic technology to minimise invasiveness. Each patient weighed over 100 kilograms with a BMI exceeding 38-40. They also suffered from diabetes, cardiac issues, and had undergone prior abdominal surgeries or radiotherapy. Their cancers were located in the pelvis, a difficult area to operate on, especially in such cases.
Dr. Swaminathan Sambandham led a multidisciplinary team to perform the surgeries over three consecutive days. The robotic approach allowed for enhanced precision and control, despite the technical challenges posed by the patients' obesity and medical histories. Cancerous tissue was removed through the stoma site, eliminating the need for large abdominal incisions.
All three patients recovered quickly after surgery. They experienced less pain, were mobilised early, and were discharged within four days. The hospital’s use of robotic technology combined with surgical expertise demonstrates its growing capability in minimally invasive cancer care. These successful surgeries further establish Kauvery Hospital Vadapalani’s reputation in robotic gastrointestinal and colorectal cancer treatment. Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj noted that advanced robotic surgery offers significant benefits in managing complex cases, including faster recovery and shorter hospital stays.
