New Schiefbahn Program Combines Sports and Memory Training for Dementia Patients

A new sports program for people with dementia and memory decline has launched in Schiefbahn. 'Sports with Dementia' offers a supportive environment for participants and their loved ones to stay active and connect. Sessions take place every Wednesday at Peter-Bäumges-Halle from 1:00 to 2:00 PM. The program is open to individuals with a confirmed dementia diagnosis as well as those noticing memory problems. It combines physical exercise with memory training, using equipment like small balls and light weights to improve muscle tone, fitness, and cognitive function.

Anja Schröter and Simone Masum run the sessions. Both have completed extensive training in dementia and physical activity, with Masum also holding a certification in neurological rehabilitation sports. Karin Oegema, who leads the Dementia Café at KRUMM & Willich’s self-help group, will be available to provide support and answer questions.

While participants exercise, caregivers can relax in the clubhouse with coffee and pastries. TVS also offers the option of a trial session for anyone interested in joining. Research supports the benefits of physical activity for people with dementia. Studies show it can slow the disease’s progression and improve mood. The program aims to create a welcoming space for movement, social interaction, and shared experiences.
