'Benadryl Challenge' Puts Teens at Risk of Deadly Overdoses
Nipissing First Nation has warned about young people taking dangerous amounts of Benadryl. The alert comes as social media trends continue to encourage its misuse. Officials stress that high doses can lead to severe health risks. A trend known as the 'Benadryl challenge' urges teens to consume multiple tablets at once to induce hallucinations. The drug, a first-generation antihistamine, is common in many households and often seen as harmless. However, excessive intake can cause drowsiness, irritability, and far more serious effects.
Overdose symptoms include difficulty breathing, seizures, coma, and fatal heart rhythm disturbances, especially when mixed with other medications. In 2020, a 15-year-old in Oklahoma City died from a diphenhydramine overdose, the active ingredient in Benadryl. More recently, a 13-year-old in the Ottawa Valley was reported to have misused the drug to get high.
Health experts note that safe dosage varies by age, body size, health conditions, and other medications. They advise caregivers to discuss safe medication use with teens and to store all drugs securely. The alert from Nipissing First Nation highlights the growing concern over Benadryl misuse among youth. Caregivers are urged to take precautions and educate young people about the dangers. The risks of overdose remain a serious threat to health and safety.
