Can Digital Tools Finally Crack the Obesity Epidemic?
More than one third of American adults are classified as obese, while over 70 percent are overweight. These conditions raise the risk of serious health issues like diabetes and stroke. Researchers are now turning to digital tools to tackle the problem and promote weight loss. A study by the University of California, San Francisco, tested the Vida Health app as a weight-loss aid. The app links users with health professionals for personalised coaching. It also uses evidence-based programmes and machine learning to support users. After four months, 28.6 percent of participants lost an average of 9.5 percent of their body weight. Meanwhile, those in the control group lost only 4 percent on average.
Another project by Stanford University’s Mobilize Center analysed smartphone data from over 700,000 people in 111 countries. The study tracked physical activity to predict obesity trends. It revealed that individuals in countries with higher inequality were nearly 200 percent more likely to be obese. Digital tools are proving effective in monitoring obesity predictors and supporting weight loss. Apps like Vida Health offer structured programmes that help users achieve significant results. These findings highlight the potential of technology in addressing a growing global health concern.
