Kazakhstan's Dangerous Trend: Why People Are Eating Chalk and Clay

A growing trend in Kazakhstan involves the consumption of chalk, clay, and sand. Known as geophagy, this practice has gained attention, with online stores selling so-called 'edible' minerals like Ural, Turkestan, and Aktau clay. Sellers claim these products provide essential minerals such as calcium, silicon, and iron. Despite the claims, medical experts warn that eating chalk or clay does not treat iron-deficiency anaemia. In fact, it is classified as pica, an eating disorder. Cravings for these substances may signal a serious health issue, such as anaemia, which requires proper treatment.

Regular consumption of chalk can cause significant harm. It may damage tooth enamel, lead to chronic constipation, worsen gastritis, and contribute to kidney stone formation. Clay and chalk can also contain heavy metals like lead and harmful microorganisms, posing risks to both the mother and unborn child in pregnant women.

The trend has been amplified by social media, where ASMR videos of people crunching and chewing these substances have become popular. However, health professionals stress that these products offer no nutritional benefits and can be dangerous. Geophagy carries real health risks, including exposure to toxins and long-term physical harm. Experts advise against consuming chalk or clay, especially for pregnant women. Those experiencing cravings should seek medical advice to address potential deficiencies safely.
