Two Colleagues Turn Cancer Battles Into Hope for Others

Two colleagues, Rick Letterman and Jeff Main, were both diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer. They now volunteer to support others facing similar battles through Allegheny Health Network’s ambassador program. Rick Letterman received his diagnosis in 2021. He felt isolated and uncertain about his future at first. Soon after, his colleague Jeff Main was also diagnosed with the same condition.

The pair decided to take action. They joined the network’s ambassador program, which connects cancer patients with survivors who understand their struggles. Terri Ronald, a three-time cancer survivor, runs the initiative.

During their weekly meetings, Letterman and Main shared their experiences with multiple myeloma. Their discussions helped shape their new project. The program grew quickly, starting with 11 volunteers in its first year and expanding to around 100 in the second. Both men are now in remission. They continue to volunteer, offering guidance and hope to others navigating cancer treatment. Their work has strengthened the ambassador program’s reach and impact.
