NHS pathology labs expose staff to dangerous formaldehyde levels, study warns
Formaldehyde exposure in NHS pathology departments is dangerously high. A new study reveals that many labs frequently exceed safe limits, putting staff at risk. Researchers analysed over 1.7 million monitoring events from 117 labs across the UK. The investigation found that 70% of labs regularly surpassed the EU’s long-term exposure limit of 0.3 ppm. Nearly a third of sites recorded levels above the UK’s higher threshold of 2 ppm at least once in the past year. Despite the risks, about 73% of labs checked formaldehyde levels only once a week or less.
The UK permits a much higher limit than the EU. While the EU enforces a strict 0.3 ppm cap for long-term exposure, the UK allows up to 2 ppm. Chronic inhalation of formaldehyde is linked to respiratory diseases, reproductive issues, and a higher risk of cancer. The research team has urged immediate reforms to exposure standards in NHS pathology departments. The findings highlight widespread non-compliance with safer EU guidelines. Staff in these labs face serious health risks without stricter controls.
