Astana's child window falls surge despite stricter safety measures in 2026

Window falls remain a serious risk for young children in Astana, particularly during spring and summer. These incidents often result in severe injuries, including fractures, brain trauma, and internal damage. Children aged one to five are the most vulnerable group. In 2023, Astana recorded 31 window fall incidents involving children, with one fatality. The following year saw a sharp rise, with 63 cases and four deaths reported in 2024.

By 2025, the trend worsened further as incidents surged to 85, including nine fatalities. Authorities responded by introducing permanent preventive measures. These included inspections, safety lectures, and the installation of window locks.

So far in 2026, the '112' emergency hotline has received 29 reports of children falling from windows. As of June 23, no fatalities have been recorded this year. Police have also conducted 5,652 preventive lectures and distributed safety brochures to households and parent chat groups. The number of window fall incidents has fluctuated in recent years, with a peak in 2025. Preventive efforts, such as awareness campaigns and physical safety measures, are now in place. These steps aim to reduce the risk of such accidents in the future.
