Davao City cracks down on youth vaping during Non-Smoking Month

Davao City has marked National Non-Smoking Month this June, as it has every year since 2002. The local government is intensifying efforts to shield young people from nicotine addiction, calling it a vital public health goal. The Vices Regulation Unit is working closely with barangays and community groups to hold weekly awareness sessions. These sessions highlight the dangers of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and vape products. Authorities have also stepped up enforcement of the Anti-Smoking Ordinance, focusing on sales to minors and the ban on smoking within 100 metres of schools.

Most violations recorded in the city involve tobacco, with vapes being the most frequently seized items. Jalyn Pareja, a smoking cessation counsellor, reports a rise in vape-related cases among young adults aged 18 to 25. The city also checks cigarette advertising and promotional materials to ensure they comply with Republic Act 9211 and local laws.

To support residents wanting to quit, the city’s Smoking Cessation Program provides free counselling and nicotine replacement therapy. Officials stress that vape devices and smokeless tobacco are not safe alternatives, as they still contain harmful substances. The city government continues to push smokers, particularly the youth, to use its free cessation services. It also encourages a shift towards healthier lifestyles. These measures aim to reduce nicotine addiction and improve public health across Davao City.
