Russia Faces Surge in Fake Medical Websites and Healthcare Scams

Fraudulent medical websites and scams are rising sharply across Russia. Criminals are exploiting public trust in healthcare with increasingly sophisticated schemes. Phone scams, fake pharmacies, and rogue apps now pose the biggest threats to unsuspecting users. In summer 2025, authorities uncovered 143 counterfeit sites pretending to be online clinics. These fraudulent platforms often mimic well-known services, offering unrealistically low drug prices and free consultations to lure victims. Customers are tricked into entering personal and banking details, which scammers then use for further attacks.

Rogue mobile apps are another growing danger. Disguised as clinic services or health-tracking tools, they harvest personal data and infiltrate medical records. Some even compromise banking applications to steal funds directly.

Phone scams remain the most common threat. Fraudsters impersonate clinic staff, capitalising on health concerns to manipulate victims into revealing sensitive information. The surge in fake medical websites and apps shows no signs of slowing. Stolen data is frequently weaponised for additional fraud. Authorities continue to warn the public about the risks of engaging with unverified healthcare services.
