Davao's blood drive fights national shortage with 50-donor goal

A blood drive took place on June 28, 2026, to tackle the country’s blood shortage. Organisers hoped to collect donations from 50 volunteers. By early afternoon, more than half of the target had already registered. The event was arranged by Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao Medical Technology-Medical Laboratory Science Department. They partnered with the Philippine Red Cross Davao City Chapter, SM City Davao, and SM Cares Foundation. The goal was to promote voluntary blood donation as a way to save lives and support both donors and recipients.

First-time donor Maria Leiraine Magno gave blood to help patients in need. She felt satisfied knowing her donation could save up to three lives. Another first-time donor, Jera Crisna Arquina, advised others to get screened before deciding they cannot donate.

To qualify, donors needed a hemoglobin level of at least 12.5 grams per deciliter. They also had to avoid alcohol for 24 hours before donating and be in good health. While B-negative is the rarest blood type, most participants at the event had O-positive blood. Organisers remained optimistic about reaching their 50-donor goal by the end of the day. Each donation can potentially save up to three lives. The drive aimed to ease the ongoing blood shortage in the country.
