Three Anne Arundel County beaches closed due to unsafe bacteria levels

The Anne Arundel County Department of Health has issued health advisories for three local beaches. Bayside Beach, Upper Magothy Beach, and Carrollton Manor now have unsafe levels of enterococci bacteria. Officials are warning the public to avoid water contact at these locations. Routine water quality tests revealed elevated bacteria levels at the affected beaches. The department tests beaches every Monday during the summer, and the latest results confirmed the contamination. Swimming, water skiing, and jet skiing are all discouraged until conditions improve.

Health officials also advise against ingesting the water, as it can cause gastrointestinal problems like diarrhoea or vomiting. People with open cuts or wounds should stay out of natural bodies of water to prevent infections such as vibrio. After any accidental contact with contaminated water, washing immediately with hot water and soap is recommended.

Fishing and crabbing may still take place at these beaches, but precautions are necessary. The department advises wearing gloves and ensuring seafood is thoroughly cooked before consumption. The Department of Health will retest the water on Monday. Updates on water quality advisories will be posted on their website and social media. The public is urged to wait at least 48 hours after heavy rainfall before swimming in natural waters.
