Astana wages all-out war on mosquitoes with 90% reduction goal

Astana has launched a large-scale mosquito control campaign to cut insect numbers by up to 90%. The operations began on 16 June and cover more than 26,000 hectares across the city. The campaign runs in six phases, with each phase lasting 20 days per month. Teams work in two shifts around the clock, focusing on night-time spraying between 9:00 PM and 4:00 AM.

Over 150 trained specialists use mechanical rotary sprayers, specialised vehicles, drones and a boat to treat different areas. Authorities have urged residents to stay away from treated zones and keep windows shut during spraying. The city aims to suppress mosquito populations significantly but not eliminate them entirely. The extensive effort involves advanced equipment and a large workforce to cover vast urban spaces.
