Kilifi's grassroots health champions transform maternal and child care
A new initiative is improving maternal and child health in Kilifi County. The programme, led by Shina Foundation, trains local community members to become health advocates. These champions help families overcome barriers to healthcare access. Shina Foundation’s Okoa Mama na Mtoto Initiative focuses on empowering people already trusted in their communities. These include boda boda riders, women leaders, and tuk-tuk operators. Nazi Kivutha, the foundation’s leader, provides advocacy training to these grassroots champions.
Norah Mulatya, a boda boda rider in Malindi, is one such champion. She uses local songs and daily conversations to teach mothers about nutrition and safe pregnancy. Her work helps families recognise pregnancy danger signs and access timely care.
The programme has now extended to tuk-tuk operators, who also receive training. They assist with health education and referrals, ensuring more families benefit from the initiative. The initiative aims to change maternal and child health outcomes across Kilifi. Community champions like Norah are now trusted sources of health information. Their efforts address gaps caused by distance and limited awareness.
