MIT engineers have created a tiny ingestible sensor to track core body temperature. The device could help detect early signs of infection in vulnerable patients. Its small size makes it far easier to swallow than older versions. Current methods for measuring temperature often rely on oral or forehead readings. However, these do not always reflect the body’s true core temperature. The new sensor, shaped like a miniature blueberry, measures just 6 millimetres in diameter and 4 millimetres in height.

Once swallowed, it transmits continuous updates from the gastrointestinal tract. Giovanni Traverso, an MIT associate professor and gastroenterologist, led the project. He stated that the sensor allows for early monitoring of infections, especially in immunosuppressed individuals.

These at-risk groups include people undergoing chemotherapy or taking immunosuppressive drugs. The technology aims to provide more accurate and timely health data for those most in need. The sensor offers a new way to monitor core temperature from within the body. It could improve infection detection for patients with weakened immune systems. The compact design and continuous tracking may make it a valuable tool in medical care.
