Over 87% Doctors Suffer Burnout, Sleep Deprivation In MP; Nearly 62% Work Shifts Exceeding 36 Hours: FAIMA Survey

Madhya Pradesh doctors face extreme burnout and 100-hour workweeks

A recent survey has revealed severe working conditions for doctors, particularly in Madhya Pradesh. Many face extreme hours, burnout, and mental health struggles. The findings highlight systemic pressures affecting both medical staff and patient care. Over 87% of resident doctors in the region report burnout and inadequate sleep. In clinical departments, this figure rises to between 97% and 98%. Long shifts, senior pressure, and relentless workloads contribute to widespread mental exhaustion.

More than 60% of respondents work continuous shifts longer than 36 hours. Nearly half work over 80 hours weekly, with 20.3% exceeding 100 hours. Only 36.3% of doctors manage to get proper rest after extended duties.

The survey also uncovered alarming mental health trends. About 17% of doctors admitted to thoughts of self-harm, and one in two has considered leaving residency due to the strain. Staff shortages, low pay, lack of mental health support, and mandatory service bonds add to the crisis. The findings underscore urgent issues in the medical profession. Excessive hours, burnout, and mental health risks threaten both doctors and patient safety. Addressing these challenges is critical to improving working conditions and care standards.
