Fürth celebrates the start of asparagus season with a ceremonial harvest

The asparagus season in the Fürth district and the city of Fürth has officially begun. District Administrator Bernd Obst and Fürth’s Lord Mayor Dr. Thomas Jung marked the start at Rotter Farm in Ritzmannshof with a ceremonial first harvest. The Rotter family has been growing asparagus for over 50 years, with the first planting dating back to the mid-1970s. Today, the farm cultivates around 70 hectares of land, with one hectare reserved for asparagus. Christoph Rotter, the sixth generation to run the farm, emphasised the role of innovation and teamwork in their success.

The family sells their asparagus exclusively through their farm shop and a select few local restaurants. They also prioritise sustainability, using a biogas plant and solar panels to meet the farm’s energy needs entirely. Asparagus is known for its health benefits, being rich in vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. It also has natural diuretic properties, offering both enjoyment and a boost to well-being. The season’s start marks a key moment for local agriculture and the community.
