UK Approves First Daily Weight-Loss Pill for Obesity Treatment

A new daily weight-loss pill has been approved for use in the UK. The medication, containing semaglutide, is the first of its kind in Europe to receive authorisation for weight management. It is designed for adults with obesity or those with a lower BMI but weight-related health issues. The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has given the green light to the tablet. It met the regulator’s standards for safety, quality and effectiveness. Clinical trials showed patients lost an average of 17% of their body weight in just over a year.

The pill contains the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection. It does not require refrigeration and can be taken as part of a daily routine. Doctors recommend pairing it with a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Initially, the tablet will only be available through prescription services. It is not yet accessible via the NHS. The treatment targets adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or those with a BMI between 27 and 30 who have at least one weight-related condition. More than 16 million adults in the UK are estimated to be living with obesity. The new pill offers a more convenient option for weight management. Its approval marks a significant step in addressing obesity-related health challenges.
