Varanasi's New Geriatric Hub to Revolutionize Elderly Healthcare in North India

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath recently visited the under-construction National Centre for Aging in Varanasi. The seven-storey facility is nearing completion and will soon serve elderly patients across Purvanchal and North India. It marks a significant step in specialised geriatric healthcare for the region. The centre is being built at a cost of around Rs 150 crore within the Banaras Hindu University’s Institute of Medical Sciences campus. Once operational, it will function as the third National Centre for Aging in India and a key healthcare hub for senior citizens in the north.

The 200-bed facility will offer modern healthcare services tailored for the elderly. These include a multi-specialty geriatric outpatient department, a Memory Clinic, and an Arthritis Clinic. It will also feature modular operation theatres, advanced radiology and diagnostic services, rehabilitation services, a day-care centre, an intensive care unit, and private wards.

Beyond patient care, the centre will focus on research into age-related diseases. It will develop treatment protocols and specialised medical guidelines for elderly patients. Training programmes for doctors and nurses in geriatric medicine will also be conducted to enhance specialised care. The National Centre for Aging aims to provide advanced and accessible healthcare for lakhs of elderly patients. Its completion will expand geriatric medical services and research capabilities in North India. The facility is expected to set new standards in elderly care upon its launch.
