Kazakhstan honors medical workers with new laws and historic awards

Kazakhstan marked Medical Workers’ Day with a grand ceremony at the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation in Astana. Health Minister Akmaral Alnazarova congratulated professionals and highlighted the vital role of the medical sector. The event also celebrated new legal and institutional advancements in healthcare. During the ceremony, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s recent laws took centre stage. One introduced mandatory professional liability insurance for medical workers, a first for the country. Another strengthened criminal penalties for attacks on healthcare staff and installed modern surveillance systems in medical facilities.

The head of state also signed legislation to improve practical training for medical personnel. In recognition of academic contributions, Astana Medical University received national status and was renamed after Toregeldy Sharmanov. Karaganda Medical University was similarly renamed to honour its founder, Pyotr Pospelov.

Alnazarova presented awards to healthcare workers from across Kazakhstan. Among the honourees was Professor Tamara Kurmangaliyevna Chuvakova, a pioneer in Kazakh neonatology, who received the Order of Barys, Second Class. The new laws aim to enhance protection and training for medical staff. The renamed universities and awarded professionals reflect the nation’s commitment to advancing healthcare. The celebrations underscored the government’s support for those dedicated to saving lives.
