Shymkent's Oncology Center Performs First Laparoscopic Whipple Surgery

Shymkent’s Multidisciplinary Oncology Center has performed its first laparoscopic Whipple procedure. This advanced surgery treats malignant tumours in the head of the pancreas and nearby organs. The achievement marks a significant step in regional cancer care. The Whipple procedure, also called pancreatoduodenal resection, is one of the most complex operations in modern oncology. It was introduced in Shymkent with support from leading specialists in Astana. Anuar Abdikarimov, an oncologist from the capital, led a series of demonstration surgeries as part of an educational masterclass.

Local doctors participated directly in the operations, gaining practical experience with the latest techniques. Modern laparoscopic technology allows the procedure to be performed through small punctures using high-precision equipment. This minimally invasive approach reduces pain, lowers complication risks, shortens hospital stays, and speeds up recovery.

Talgat Kurmanov, director of the centre, noted that the institution is actively adopting advanced diagnostic and treatment methods. Mastering this surgery means residents can now access complex care locally. The successful introduction of laparoscopic pancreatic surgery in Shymkent improves access to specialised treatment. It reduces the need for patients to travel and supports the development of regional medical services. The centre plans to continue expanding its capabilities in cancer care.
