New Diagnostic Tool Aims to Save Extremely Preterm Infants' Lives

Scientists at Siberian State Medical University are developing a diagnostic panel for extremely preterm infants. The tool targets babies born with weights between 500 and 1,500 grams. It aims to predict and prevent serious complications in this vulnerable group. The project focuses on infants born between the 22nd and 28th weeks of pregnancy. Their distinct metabolic processes and thyroid hormone function require special attention. Nearly 70% of these newborns develop bronchopulmonary dysplasia or bone tissue abnormalities.

The diagnostic panel will use mass spectrometry to analyse multiple parameters. These include standard biochemical markers, metabolic profiles, genetic markers of bone formation, and hormonal patterns. Based on the results, patients will be divided into three risk groups: low, moderate, and high.

Infants at low risk will receive routine monitoring. Those with moderate risk will need more frequent medical oversight. For high-risk babies, specialists will adjust treatment strategies in advance to prevent severe complications. The diagnostic method aims to reduce long-term risks for preterm infants. It will help develop tailored monitoring strategies to improve outcomes. The panel is designed to detect early signs of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and bone tissue disorders.
