A Nurse's Lifelong Bond With the Baby She Saved From Fire

A retired nurse and a former patient share a lifelong bond after a tragic accident decades ago. Wynola Wayne, who spent 58 years as a nurse, once cared for Marco Houpe when he was just 15 months old and severely burned in a fire. In 1965, Marco Houpe suffered third-degree burns over 85% of his body after a Christmas tree fire. Wynola Wayne, then a new nurse at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, treated him. Despite the severity of his injuries, she believed he would survive.

His parents later credited Wayne with saving his life. The two formed a lasting connection, so strong that Wayne named her own son after him. At her retirement, Houpe escorted her out of the building, and she received a five-minute standing ovation.

Today, Houpe is married with two children and works as a school administrator and coach. He still considers Wayne his guardian angel. Their story spans over half a century, from a hospital room to a retirement celebration. Wayne’s career as a nurse ended after 58 years, but her impact on Houpe’s life remains. He now honours her memory through his own work and family.
