Free senior gymnastics program faces closure after funding cuts in Delta
A free gymnastics program for seniors in Delta is now at risk after losing its provincial funding. The Seniors Can Move initiative, which has helped hundreds of older adults since 2018, may soon have to charge participants unless new support is found. Organisers are searching for a grant or sponsor to keep the classes accessible to all. The Seniors Can Move program launched in 2018 with strong backing from the community. Last year alone, it offered over 300 free spots to participants aged 65 to 97. The classes focus on fall prevention and recovery, addressing key concerns for older adults.
For years, the program relied on an annual grant of between £60,000 and £75,000 from the provincial government. But this year, the funding was denied without a clear explanation. B.C. Health Minister Josie Osborne’s ministry acknowledged budget pressures, stating that not all worthy programs could be supported. Without the grant, Delta Gymnastics fears many seniors will no longer be able to attend. Most participants live on fixed or limited incomes, making even small fees a barrier. The program has played a vital role in maintaining their health and mobility.
Delta Gymnastics is now exploring alternative funding options to avoid passing costs to participants. The loss of provincial support puts the future of the program in doubt. If no solution is found, hundreds of seniors could lose access to a service that has improved their quality of life.
