Altai Krai battles swarms of mosquitoes, midges and rising tick threats

Warm weather in May has kicked off the insect season in Altai Krai. Residents now face swarms of mosquitoes, midges, and other bloodsucking pests that thrive in the region at this time of year. The problem extends beyond mere annoyance, with ticks also posing a growing risk. Mosquito larvae are already developing in local water bodies. If the current conditions hold, adult mosquitoes will emerge in roughly two weeks. Strong winds with gusts reaching 25 m/s might help by disrupting their breeding cycles and reducing numbers.

Unlike mosquitoes, some pests like blackflies and no-see-ums are harder to fend off. Wind does little to deter them, and swatting proves ineffective. These tiny insects can slip into eyes, ears, and even beneath clothing, causing irritation. Health officials advise wearing long-sleeved cotton clothing with hoods for protection. Repellents are also strongly recommended to guard against bites. Meanwhile, tick activity has surged, with 490 residents reporting bites in just one week.

The combination of mosquitoes, midges, and ticks is making outdoor activities more challenging in Altai Krai. Without preventive measures, residents risk discomfort and potential health issues. Authorities continue to urge caution as the season progresses.
