Astana's Intergenerational Mental Arithmetic Championship Unites All Ages

Astana recently hosted a unique mental arithmetic championship that brought together nearly 100 participants of all ages. Schoolchildren, young adults, and pensioners competed side by side in an event designed to sharpen minds and foster connections. The competition took place at Comfortable School No. 103 under the Baıterek initiative, supported by UCMAS. The championship began with a formal opening ceremony, where attendees stood for the performance of Kazakhstan’s national anthem. Around 250 people gathered to watch the event, which aimed to break generational barriers through mental arithmetic.

For a year leading up to the competition, senior participants received free training in mental arithmetic. Organisers noted that the practice helps children manage stress and improve quick-thinking skills, while for older adults, it acts as a preventive measure against Alzheimer’s. Mental arithmetic has grown steadily in Kazakhstan over the past decade, with annual citywide and national competitions. This year’s event stood out for its intergenerational format, blending education with social interaction. Representatives from Astana’s Amanat party, including the chair of the Yesil District branch and the capital’s education department head, attended to show their support.

The championship highlighted the benefits of mental arithmetic across age groups. Participants left with improved cognitive skills, while seniors gained tools to maintain mental sharpness. The event reinforced the project’s role in connecting generations through learning and competition.
