Austria's Hidden Crisis: 1.1 Million Face Food Poverty Amid Rising Costs
Over 1.1 million people in Austria—12% of the population—are struggling with food poverty. Many cannot afford balanced meals, often skipping food or relying on cheap, processed options. In response, the Samaritan Federation has launched the Hunger Winter campaign to highlight the growing crisis and call for public support. Food poverty hits single parents, single-person households, and the unemployed the hardest. Those affected frequently face long-term health issues, including obesity, diabetes, and mental health problems. Without proper nutrition, many also develop cardiovascular diseases.
The Samaritan Federation already distributes 600 free food parcels each month. These contain essentials like long-life foods, hygiene products, and fresh produce. Their *Samaritan Food Box* initiative began with funding from the Social Ministry but now depends entirely on donations to keep running. To raise awareness, the campaign will project its donation appeal onto the MuseumsQuartier façade. A donation box will also be placed at the MQ Infopoint. Supporters can contribute online at *samariterwien.at/armvent* or via bank transfer to **AT43 2011 1890 8900 2400**, using the reference *Armvent AAN*.
The Hunger Winter campaign aims to tackle food poverty through public donations and solidarity. Every contribution helps provide meals for those in need. Organisers also stress that supporting the initiative strengthens social cohesion and democratic values.
