Belarus revolutionizes liver surgery with cutting-edge robotic precision
Belarus has taken a major step forward in advanced surgery with the introduction of a robotic system for liver operations. The technology, now in use at the Minsk Scientific and Practical Center for Surgery, Transplantology, and Hematology, brings the country's treatment of focal liver lesions up to global standards. Since its first successful procedure in February, the system has already improved patient outcomes and expanded surgical possibilities.
The first robotic liver resection took place on February 19, 2024, at the Minsk center. Using the Medbot surgical system, surgeons performed a partial liver removal with high precision. The patient recovered well and is now preparing for discharge.
The robotic instruments offer seven degrees of freedom, allowing access to complex areas of the liver. High-resolution 3D visualisation ensures unmatched accuracy, while the minimally invasive approach reduces tissue trauma. Patients benefit from less blood loss, fewer complications, and shorter hospital stays.
Since the initial operation, the center has completed over 20 robotic liver procedures. Earlier in February, surgeons also carried out their first independent robotic surgery on a patient with gallbladder and liver disease. The collaboration with Medbot includes staff training in China, technology upgrades for better precision, and joint research to expand robotic applications in transplantology by early 2026.
The new robotic system has already shown clear advantages in liver surgery. Patients experience fewer wound infections, less postoperative pain, and lower overall morbidity. With ongoing training and research, the Minsk center aims to further refine the technology and broaden its use in complex surgeries.
