Left Party Wants Care Centers for Care, Culture, and Consultation - Berlin's Left Party Proposes Radical 'Care City' Hubs for Community Wellbeing
Berlin's Left Party has put forward a plan to create new 'care city' facilities across the city. These party city spaces would mix healthcare, cultural activities, and community spaces in one place. The proposal comes as part of the party's Caring City Action Plan, launched ahead of International Women's Day.
The care credit facilities would offer more than just medical support. Inside, residents could take part in art projects, leisure activities, and self-help groups. Open workshops and grassroots organising would also have a place, alongside social events.
The Left Party wants the first site to run as a pilot project. Possible locations include state-owned buildings or newly constructed spaces. However, no specific sites in Berlin have been reviewed or suggested by the city's administration or Senate so far.
Each care credit facility would remain in public ownership. But day-to-day operations would be handled democratically by local care councils, made up of neighbourhood members. The party's goal is to move care work away from private individuals and towards a shared, community-led approach.
The proposal marks a shift in how care could be organised in Berlin. If adopted, the care city facilities would combine practical services with cultural and social opportunities. The Left Party now faces the task of securing support and identifying suitable locations for the pilot.
