Biocoach Uses AI to Perfect Your Home Workouts in Real Time

A new AI-powered fitness trainer called Biocoach has been developed by researchers at Drexel University and Michigan State University. The digital tool aims to improve home workouts by giving real-time feedback on exercise form. Early tests show it performs better than existing computer vision models in assessing movement and offering corrections. Biocoach uses AI and computer vision to track users as they exercise. It analyses movement patterns instantly and provides tailored feedback based on a 3D skeletal model. Unlike other systems, it combines a 'biomechanical eye' with personalised instructions for greater accuracy.

The researchers trained the AI on an expanded dataset, adding around 2,400 new annotations to the Qualcomm Exercise Video Dataset (QEVD). They tested its performance across 23 common exercises, including squats, lunges, jumping jacks, and push-ups. Results showed Biocoach delivered higher-quality corrections than traditional models. The tool arrives as home workouts grow in popularity. In 2023, nearly 13 million exercise devices were found in German households, with one in four homes owning at least one. However, beginners often struggle with proper technique, increasing the risk of injuries. Biocoach aims to address this by guiding users through safer, more effective movements.

Biocoach offers a smarter way to train at home, using advanced AI to monitor and correct form. Its dual-system design and real-time feedback could help reduce workout-related injuries. The technology is now available for those looking to improve their fitness routines with expert-level guidance.
