Black Cumin Seed Powder Shows Promise for Weight and Heart Health
A recent study has highlighted the potential benefits of black cumin seed powder for weight control and heart health. Published in the Journal of Food Science and Nutrition, the research suggests that daily consumption may improve cholesterol levels and support healthy weight management. Experts are now examining its role as a functional food in preventing lifestyle-related diseases.
The study found that adults with elevated cholesterol experienced notable improvements after taking 5 grams of black cumin seed powder daily for eight weeks. Participants saw reductions in triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol, while their HDL cholesterol levels rose.
Earlier laboratory experiments also showed that black cumin seed extract slows the growth of fat cells. Professor Akiko Kojima Yuasa has since proposed that the seeds could help combat obesity and related health issues.
While no large-scale study from Osaka Metropolitan University on this topic has been confirmed, smaller trials have taken place. A 2023 Iranian study (n=80) reported BMI reductions, and a 2024 Indian trial (n=120) observed lipid improvements. However, larger confirmatory studies are still needed to solidify these findings.
The research points to black cumin seed powder as a promising addition to diets aimed at weight and heart health. With evidence of improved cholesterol and slowed fat cell growth, further studies may strengthen its case as a functional food. For now, experts recommend cautious optimism until more extensive trials are completed.
