Boy, 9, Survives Brain Injury After Scooter Fall Sparks Emergency Surgery
A nine-year-old boy in Nakhodka suffered a severe traumatic brain injury after falling from a scooter. Though his external injuries appeared minor—just a small bruise and swelling—he developed a sudden, severe headache and vomiting after waking from sleep. He was rushed to Nakhodka City Hospital in a state of confusion, the medical facility's press service reported.
"A CT scan revealed a skull fracture and a massive brain hemorrhage," the statement said.
A neurosurgical team fought for two hours to save the child's life. During emergency surgery, doctors performed a craniotomy, removing approximately 100 ml of blood clots from the cranial cavity. They also located and stopped the source of the bleeding—a damaged cerebral artery—which they cauterized using specialized equipment.
The boy is now in stable condition and has been discharged from the hospital for further outpatient treatment.
As the season for scooters, bicycles, and other small wheeled transport approaches, doctors at Nakhodka City Hospital urge parents to prioritize basic safety measures: always use helmets, knee pads, and elbow pads, and closely supervise where and how their children ride.
This follows a recent incident in Vladivostok in early March, where a teenager on an electric scooter was involved in a traffic accident.
