Calgary’s bariatric care gets £1M boost with major facility upgrades

Two Calgary care centres will receive major upgrades to improve bariatric services. The Calgary Health Foundation has donated £1 million to Assisted Living Alberta (ALA) for the project. Work will take place at Carewest Garrison Green and Carewest Sarcee over the next two years.

The funding will expand and modernise bariatric care at both locations. At Garrison Green, seven existing spaces will be upgraded with better equipment and accessibility features. Sarcee will gain a new bariatric bed alongside improved facilities for safe transfers and rehabilitation.

The upgrades aim to support patients who are medically stable but still need rehabilitation or complex discharge planning. By providing specialised care, the project will help free up acute hospital beds across Alberta. Construction at Garrison Green is set to finish by summer 2026, while work at Sarcee will wrap up in the following autumn. A formal event in fall 2026 will mark the completion of the improvements.

The investment will increase access to bariatric care for Albertans in need. Once complete, the upgraded facilities will allow more patients to receive specialised rehabilitation closer to home. The project is expected to ease pressure on acute care services in the region.
