Union Hospital in Elkton will shut its Family Birth Center on June 30th. The decision, made by ChristianaCare, leaves Cecil County without a local birthing facility. Residents now face longer travel times for labour and delivery services. The closure stems from an aging population and ongoing workforce shortages. As a result, 31 staff members—including two doctors and 26 nurses—will lose their jobs. First-time mother Kasey Conner, due in early July, had planned to deliver at the centre and had grown close to the team there.
A public hearing on the closure is set for June 11th at 5 pm at the Comfort Inn in North East, Maryland. Cecil County Executive Adam Streight has raised concerns about the lack of notice and the effect on Maryland Medicaid patients. With the centre closing, expectant mothers must now travel to Christiana Hospital in Delaware, 13 miles away, or Upper Chesapeake Hospital in Harford County, roughly an hour’s drive.
Conner has adjusted her plans and will deliver at Christiana Hospital instead. She remains hopeful that maternal healthcare options in the area will improve in the future. The shutdown removes the only birthing centre in Cecil County, forcing families to seek care further afield. Those affected, including staff and expectant parents, now await potential solutions from the upcoming public discussion.
