Käthe Kollwitz to Jutta Müller: Exhibitions in Chemnitz - Chemnitz Art Collections unveil 2024 exhibitions blending history and bold visions
The Chemnitz Art Collections have announced a diverse programme for the coming year. Food will take centre stage as a major theme, tracing its cultural impact from biblical times to modern debates. Several new exhibitions will also highlight works by famous artists and historical figures.
At Theaterplatz, the Art Collections will open Utopia: The Right to Hope, an exhibition featuring contemporary artists. Their works will present bold visions for a fairer and more sustainable future.
Later in the year, the Schlossberg Museum will host a show dedicated to legendary ice skating coach Jutta Müller. For the first time, parts of her personal estate will go on public display. The search for a curator for this 2026 exhibition remains ongoing. A separate exhibition will explore the creative partnership of Wolfgang Mattheuer and his wife, Ursula Mattheuer-Neustädt. Their combined works will offer insights into their shared artistic journey. Meanwhile, the museum will revisit the legacy of Käthe Kollwitz by pairing her pieces from the Chemnitz collection with new photography. Students from Leipzig’s Academy of Visual Arts will contribute contemporary perspectives on her themes.
The Chemnitz Art Collections’ 2024 programme spans historical reflections, artistic collaborations, and forward-looking visions. Visitors can expect exhibitions that connect past and present, from food’s symbolic role to fresh interpretations of iconic artists.
