A new study from University College Cork suggests that coffee may boost both gut health and mental well-being. Researchers found that regular coffee consumption alters gut bacteria in ways that could fight harmful microbes. The findings also link coffee to improved mood and cognitive benefits under certain conditions. The study involved 31 regular coffee drinkers and 31 non-drinkers to examine how coffee affects the gut-brain axis—a two-way communication network between the brain and digestive system. After analysing gut bacteria, researchers discovered higher levels of Eggertella sp. and Cryptobacterium curtum in those who drank coffee. These bacteria are believed to help combat stomach infections and harmful microbes when present in greater numbers.

Participants who drank one cup of coffee reported better moods, according to the 2025 findings. Surprisingly, only the group consuming decaf coffee showed improvements in learning and memory. This suggests that plant compounds in coffee, rather than caffeine alone, may play a key role in cognitive benefits. The research also included a two-week coffee abstinence period. When both groups resumed drinking coffee, they experienced lower stress levels and further mood enhancements. The results indicate that coffee may influence microbial interactions and the production of metabolic byproducts, pointing to broader health implications.

The study highlights coffee’s potential as part of a balanced diet for maintaining gut health. By altering gut bacteria and supporting mental well-being, it could offer wider benefits beyond simple stimulation. Researchers emphasise that both caffeinated and decaf varieties may contribute to these effects, depending on the compounds involved.
