Elderly Women Pushed to the Ground - Perpetrator Must Undergo Therapy - Court Orders Treatment for Schizophrenic Attacker After Violent Assaults on Elderly Women
A man with severe mental health issues violently attacked two elderly women without provocation, leaving them with serious injuries. The court later ruled that he was not criminally responsible due to diminished capacity. Despite the acquittal, concerns remain about public safety if his condition goes untreated.
The attacker, diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and alcohol addiction, lived in a supervised care home in Hamburg-Rahlstedt before the incidents. He received regular medical visits and support from a nursing service under the oversight of the Christophshof e.V. guardianship association.
In a sudden outburst, he shoved an 86-year-old woman to the ground, fracturing her upper arm and pelvic ring. Moments later, he assaulted an 87-year-old woman, causing severe bruising to her hip joint and a deep contusion. He also attempted to attack a cyclist and verbally abused police officers during his arrest, threatening them while being transported to the station.
The court found him not guilty by reason of mental incapacity and ordered mandatory treatment. Instead of prison, he was placed under biweekly hospital checks to monitor his medication and sobriety. After his initial detention in Hamburg's Billwärder prison, he was transferred to psychiatric care. By autumn 2025, he was held in Italy's Santa Fu prison pending extradition, with no fixed address in Germany and limited access to mental health care.
The judge stressed that the attacker remains a risk to the public if his mental health and addiction issues are not properly managed. The court's ruling ensures ongoing supervision, but his current detention in Italy raises questions about the continuity of his mental health treatment. Both victims continue to recover from their injuries.
