Detox Tea Boom Raises Health Hopes—and Safety Concerns

Detox teas are growing in popularity as more people turn to herbal remedies for health benefits. These blends often include ingredients like green tea, dandelion root, and ginger, which are believed to support the body's natural cleansing processes. Yet concerns remain over certain products containing banned substances or risky ingredients like senna. The global market for detox teas has expanded rapidly, rising from USD 2.45 billion in 2024 to USD 2.94 billion in 2025. By 2033, it is expected to reach USD 12.63 billion. This surge reflects a broader trend, particularly among millennials, who are choosing tea as a healthier alternative to alcohol or as a way to manage stress.

Detox teas typically combine herbs, roots, and spices known for their potential benefits. Green tea, rich in antioxidants, is said to boost metabolism and immunity. Dandelion root may assist liver function, while ginger and peppermint can ease digestion and reduce bloating. Many blends also feature nettle, oats, or artichoke, which are linked to natural detoxification. However, not all products are safe. Authorities have flagged teas like CENNATEA Tea Detox and Slinmy/Slimmy for containing banned substances such as sibutramine and danthron. Other recalled items, including Fat Killer Plus and Sliming Bomb, have raised similar concerns. Overuse of ingredients like senna can also lead to dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, or dependency. Legitimate brands, such as Kusmi Blue Detox and Pukka Clean Green, focus on simpler herbal mixes without additives. These differ from international varieties like Pukka's Matcha Detox, which may include matcha, ginger, and lemon. The body's natural detox systems—liver, kidneys, digestion, and sweating—are often highlighted in marketing, though claims about toxin removal vary.

The rise of detox teas aligns with growing interest in wellness and traditional herbal remedies. While many blends offer natural ingredients with potential benefits, consumers must remain cautious about unregulated products. Authorities continue to monitor the market, particularly for items containing harmful or banned substances.
